The Governor of California Veto's Bills
SACRAMENTO – The public may know them best as stars of reality television, but on Tuesday they will step off the red carpet and into the corridors of the California State Capitol to help turn the spotlight on the tragic reality facing millions of homeless animals – the victims of pet overpopulation – in the United States each year.
PetPAC representing nearly 50,000 pet owners strongly opposes Senate Bill 250 by Senator Dean Florez (D-Shafter), which would force mandatory sterilization of dogs and cats unless owners obtained an unaltered dog license.
Legislation to force the sterilization of nearly all dogs and cats in California will result in serious
unintended consequences, according to PetPAC, a 32,000-member grassroots organization
dedicated to protecting the rights of animals and their owners.
Animal Shelter Costs Double Following Mandatory Spay/Neuter Law Claims that a law to force the sterilization of dogs and cats in California “will save millions of taxpayer dollars” are being discounted after government documents show that animal control expenses have nearly doubled in the county that serves as the model for the proposed statewide measure.
“Unbelievable” was the reaction from PetPAC members today after the California State Assembly voted 41-38 to outlaw the existence of mixed-breed dogs and cats in the Golden State.
"AB 1634 is another unfunded state mandate which will cost cities and counties over $1 billion annually and impact the budgets, resources, and working K9s of law enforcement agencies across California," said Bill Hemby, Chairman of PetPAC, which represents groups opposing the measure.
